{"id":2287,"date":"2011-06-28T13:01:24","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T11:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/?p=2287"},"modified":"2021-10-29T09:51:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T07:51:57","slug":"the-launch-of-tot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/the-launch-of-tot\/","title":{"rendered":"The launch of TOT"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Three challenges and a new business<\/h3>\n<p>I stopped touring in 2000, not so much because I wanted to put down my <a title=\"Maglite\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maglite.com\/product.asp?psc=2AAACELL&amp;pt=R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maglite<\/a>, but because clients approached me with challenging requests that appealed to my background as an industrial psychologist.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">Technical production<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/wp-content\/media_en_files\/Wadaiko-Ichiro.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2404\" title=\"Wadaiko Ichiro\" src=\"https:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/wp-content\/media_en_files\/Wadaiko-Ichiro-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"Wadaiko Ichiro\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a successful tour with Wadaiko Ichiro in 1996,\u00a0<a title=\"Van Baasbank &amp; Baggerman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/van-baasbank-en-baggerman\/\">Van Baasbank &amp; Baggerman<\/a> asked me to join them as their technical coordinator. Working with international companies seemed to be a challenge that fitted me like a glove. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I love extraordinary artistic performances, and do everything within my power to provide a performance with the freedom it requires, even on a tight budget. I have long-term relationships with both the creators and the theatres booking the performances, and always keep my finger on the pulse, even when I contract work out to colleagues. Now international producers and festivals know where to find TOT. The <a title=\"Technical production\" href=\"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/sectie\/technical-production\/\">Technical Production<\/a> section on this site speaks volumes.<\/p>\n<h3>ICT project management<\/h3>\n<p>A second challenge was issued by the <a title=\"Stadsschouwburg Utrecht\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssbu.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stadsschouwburg Utrecht<\/a>\u00a0theatre, who asked me to reorganise the scheduling of the technical department. I initiated a transition from analogue to digital and from departmental lists to a centrally-saved one. This lead to the technical organisation, the central organisational point that processes all the technical information and creates the staff schedules. I implemented an event and a staff scheduling system, which thoroughly satisfied the theatre for many years. The experience that I garnered during that time, which did not go unnoticed, comprises the basis for my business\u2019 second specialty: currently TOT undertakes all sorts of cutting-edge work concerning automation and business practices for numerous clients. The <a title=\"ICT Project Management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/sectie\/ict-project-management\/\">ICT project management<\/a> section covers this.<\/p>\n<h3>Uurwerk staff scheduler<\/h3>\n<p>The staff scheduling program I implemented at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht is not suitable for the entire cultural sector. It is too big, too costly, too inflexible, which is a pity because there was and still is a high demand for an events-guided staff scheduling program which monitors CBA and compliance with the Working Hours Act. After much searching, I came across an alternative in 2005, which I purchased from the developer. I called it <a title=\"Uurwerk personnel scheduler\" href=\"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/sectie\/uurwerk-personnel-scheduler\/\">Uurwerk<\/a> and made it TOT\u2019s product. This was the third challenge to cross my path.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/sectie\/uurwerk-personeelsplanner\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2406\" title=\"Logo Uurwerk\" src=\"https:\/\/www.totheater.nl\/english\/wp-content\/media_en_files\/logo_uurwerk_150dpi_kl-300x54.jpg\" alt=\"Logo Uurwerk\" width=\"300\" height=\"54\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>TOT<\/h3>\n<p>In 2002, these three challenges culminated into TOT. Originally, the letters stood for Technical Organisation for Theatre. That\u2019s quite a mouthful, which over the years increasingly fell short in explaining exactly what we do, since TOT does not work for theatre alone.
